The Friary
Residential Recording and Mixing Complex

Aspley Guise, Bedfordshire

In the quiet village of Aspley Guise, this newly built recording studio is one of our largest projects to date. A series of outbuildings were demolished to make way for this new build. We were involved from the conception, from initial design and planning permission, through to the wiring and bespoke furniture.

Studio A consists of a large 64 square meter day lit control room, with bespoke birch ply island and furniture, centred around a G Series 48 channel SSL console. The main Munroe M1 soffit mounted monitors are separated by one of the two huge windows overlooking the garden. Adjacent to the control room, through the sound lock and machine room is the 28 square meter live room, which has a floating isolation booth and echo chamber.

“Barny at StudioBuilds constructed a long-time dream from start to finish. From sketches and planning permission, to hidden whisky cabinets and bookshelf doors - he managed to interpret my crazy demands, and somehow keep things on budget. The talk of the studio is always the birch ply finishings, doors and door frames tying into window frames and radiator covers. There is also a huge, two-tier producer island - over 4 metres long and housing all the outboard. The control room is perfectly balanced with focused bass, and the live room has live and dampened options, simply by moving the instruments around. Built from a producer's mindset, the studio is as practical as it is magical."

The recreational areas consists of a custom made birch ply kitchen and lounge area. The timber framed accommodation quarters are to be added onto to the main building after completion.

The adjacent Studio B is a timber framed and cedar clad construction and has has an impressive 28 square meter floor space with floating isolation booth.

Both Studio A and B are now nearing completion.
